Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about Personal Codex, ordering, setup, and support.
The Product
What is Personal Codex?
Personal Codex is a pre-built offline knowledge appliance powered by Project NOMAD, an open-source platform developed by Crosstalk Solutions. Your unit arrives fully configured with the complete text of Wikipedia, global offline maps, medical references, educational content, and a local AI assistant that can read and navigate your entire library – all without an internet connection.
What is Project NOMAD?
Project NOMAD is an open-source offline knowledge server platform developed by Crosstalk Solutions. It has over 26,100 GitHub stars and was the #1 trending project on GitHub in March 2026. Personal Codex is an independent commercial implementation of Project NOMAD – we handle the hardware sourcing, configuration, benchmarking, and shipping so you do not have to build it yourself. Personal Codex is entirely independent of Crosstalk Solutions LLC.
What is the NOMAD Benchmark Score?
The NOMAD Benchmark is a community-developed performance score used across hundreds of Project NOMAD builds worldwide. It measures how quickly your unit runs local AI models and searches your offline library. The community average is around 67. Our Codex Standard typically scores 80 – 95 – meaning faster, more responsive local AI than the typical self-built NOMAD machine.
What content comes pre-loaded?
Every Personal Codex ships with the full Project NOMAD library including the complete text of Wikipedia, global vector maps, medical references, educational courses, and a local AI model. Content reflects the state of the source databases at the time of your build.
What is the difference between the three tiers?
The primary difference is AI performance. The Codex Essential runs basic local AI at 5 – 20 tokens per second using CPU-only inference – good for simple questions and reference lookups. The Codex Standard uses an AMD Radeon integrated GPU to deliver 30 – 55 tokens per second – fast enough for real, fluid conversations. The Codex Power uses a dedicated NVIDIA GPU for 200+ tokens per second and the ability to run large AI models. All three tiers include the full offline knowledge library.
Is this a prepper product?
It works great in off-grid scenarios but that is not who it is built for. Personal Codex is for anyone who wants permanent, reliable access to human knowledge without depending on an internet connection – researchers, remote workers, educators, rural families, and people who simply value owning their information rather than renting access to it.
Ordering and Fulfillment
Why does it take 4 – 6 weeks to ship?
Each unit is built after your order is placed – we do not keep pre-built inventory. This lets us source current hardware, configure and load the full NOMAD library, run the benchmark, and verify performance before anything ships to you.
Can I cancel my order?
Because every unit is custom-configured to your order, we do not accept cancellations once an order is placed and confirmed. If you have a concern before your order ships, contact us at hello@personal-codex.com and we will do our best to work with you.
Do you ship outside the continental United States?
Not at this time. We ship within the continental United States only.
What payment methods do you accept?
We accept all major credit and debit cards. Payment is processed securely at checkout.
What is your return policy?
Due to the custom build-to-order nature of our products, we do not accept returns. Every unit is tested and verified working before it ships. If your unit arrives damaged or not working as described, contact us within 7 days of delivery and we will work with you to resolve it.
What warranty do I get?
Every Personal Codex is tested and verified working before it leaves us. Your unit ships with whatever manufacturer warranty came with its hardware components. We stand behind our configuration work – if something is not working as it should when it arrives, reach out and we will work with you to make it right.
Setup and Support
Does this require an internet connection to set up?
No. Your Codex arrives fully configured. Power it on, connect your laptop, phone, or tablet to the local Wi-Fi network it generates, and you are reading immediately. No setup, no downloads, no internet required at any point.
How do I connect to my Codex?
Power on your unit and connect any device – laptop, phone, or tablet – to the Wi-Fi network it generates. Open a browser and navigate to the local address included in your setup guide. No internet connection required.
What happens if NOMAD releases an update after I receive my unit?
Nothing happens automatically – your Codex keeps working exactly as it did on day one. If you want to update to a newer NOMAD version or refresh your content library, our Codex Current support plan walks you through it step by step. Updates are optional and entirely your choice.
What is Codex Current?
Codex Current is our optional support plan at $9/month or $89/year. It includes guided NOMAD update walkthroughs, new content pack guidance, email support with 48-hour response, and access to our private customer Discord.
What is Codex Concierge?
Codex Concierge is our full-service support plan at $29/month or $269/year. It includes everything in Codex Current plus remote-assist sessions via secure screen share, AI model swaps and tuning, and priority 24-hour support.
Do I need a support plan?
No. Your Codex works exactly as configured on day one with no ongoing maintenance required. Support plans are for owners who want guided help with updates and content refreshes over time.
Can I add more content or update the AI model myself?
Yes – Project NOMAD is fully open source and the community actively develops guides for adding content and swapping AI models. Our Codex Current and Concierge plans can also walk you through this process if you prefer guided assistance.
Technical
What operating system does it run?
Personal Codex units run Linux with Project NOMAD configured via Docker. You do not need any Linux knowledge to use your unit – the interface is entirely browser-based.
Can I use it as a regular computer as well?
The unit runs a full Linux operating system so technically yes, but it is optimized and configured specifically for the NOMAD platform. We recommend treating it as a dedicated appliance.
What are the power requirements?
All Personal Codex units run on standard US power (120V). Specific power consumption varies by tier and is detailed on the Build Specs page.
Can the Codex Essential be upgraded later?
The Codex Essential is built on a refurbished enterprise mini PC. Upgrading the AI performance significantly would require adding an external GPU via an eGPU enclosure. The Codex Standard includes an OCuLink port specifically for this purpose. Contact us if you have questions about upgrade paths.
